About Proud Barn
The story of a man, a vision, and a very specific shade of yellow-green.
The Founder, circa 2003
Our Founder
In the summer of 1997, a man drove through the American heartland and saw something that troubled him deeply: barn after barn, all painted the same boring red.
"Where's the pizzazz?" he asked no one in particular. "Where's the joie de vivre? These barns deserve better. These barns deserve chartreuse."
His grandchildren, ages 6 through 12, had absolutely no idea what chartreuse was. They nodded politely. He continued undeterred.
And so Proud Barn was born — not just a company, but a movement. A belief that every barn in America deserves to stand out. To be seen. To be proud.
Our Mission
"To paint every barn in America chartreuse, one barn at a time, until the fruited plains are dotted with the most magnificent shade of yellow-green the world has ever known."
Company History
A timeline of excellence in chartreuse.
Proud Barn founded. First barn painted chartreuse in rural Missouri. Neighbors describe the result as "certainly visible."
Second barn painted. Business expands to two states. The founder's wife describes the enterprise as "interesting."
Y2K preparations include stockpiling chartreuse paint. "Barns will still need painting after the apocalypse," says the founder.
Proud Barn launches its first website on GeoCities. Features animated flames and a MIDI rendition of "Old MacDonald Had a Farm."
The 100th barn milestone. Local newspaper runs story with headline: "Area Man Will Not Stop Painting Barns Chartreuse."
Proud Barn briefly considers adding a second color option. The idea is immediately rejected. "That would compromise our vision," says the founder.
The 1,000th barn. A celebration is held. Cake is served. The cake is chartreuse.
Named "Most Specialized Painting Company in America" by Paint & Coatings Quarterly. "They literally do one thing," notes the editor.
Pandemic pivot: Proud Barn offers curbside chartreuse consultations. "We can describe the color over the phone," explains the founder.
Introduces "Chartreuse Plus™" — a second shade of chartreuse that is, by all measurable standards, identical to the first.
Our Team
Proud Barn employs a dedicated team of chartreuse specialists, each trained in the ancient art of applying one specific color to agricultural structures.
Current Openings: We are always looking for painters who are passionate about chartreuse and comfortable with livestock.
